I’m Koh Siew Yeng from Penang, Malaysia,
currently working at the Seniora Day Care Centre.
At the day care centre,
I often face a common challenge:
Many seniors are unwilling to move.
It’s not that they don’t want to —
they’re just afraid of falling or getting hurt.
They often say:
“I’m scared of falling.”
“My legs have no strength.”
“It’s better if I just sit.”
Every morning during exercise time,
I spend a lot of time encouraging them,
but the results are still very minimal.
Until one day,
I introduced walking sticks into our centre—
and slowly, things started to change.
We started with the simplest movements:
sitting down while holding the walking sticks,
practicing pushing, pulling, and lifting movements.
No rush to stand, no pressure.
just gently accompanying them, step by step.
Slowly, those who were once hesitant
started trying to stand up.
With the sticks in their hands,
they felt more stable,
and more confident.
Some even began doing more stretching,
and eventually, took small steps forward.
In that moment, I realised:
It’s not just the body that starts to move —
it’s the heart too.
The walking stick isn’t just an exercise tool.
To me, it’s like a “stick of confidence”,
helping seniors slowly regain their balance,
and walk their path again, with dignity.
I’m really thankful to Positive2U Sdn Bhd
for inviting Dr.Kuo to Malaysia
to share this walking stick exercise method.
Thanks to this opportunity,
I learned simple and practical ways
to guide seniors through the movements safely and with confidence.
Now, I hope to bring what I’ve learned
into our day care centre and senior clubs,
to help more elderly who fear falling or moving.
The walking stick does more than help people move —
it helps them take back control of their lives.
As long as we keep walking beside them,
step by step,
they’ll walk stronger,
and live with dignity once again.
